My addictions have been squash, pc games, console games just to name a few. But those have been the past or rather 'part time' addiction now.
My current addiction are web surfing and mobile phone.
(1) Laptop
Bugger, I have been out of laptop for 2 weeks and has been such a pain in the a##. I have my personal and official data which I carry with it everyday. When it was down with corrupted registry (don't ask how I got it, obviously some viruses), only I realised I have depended/relied too much on it. But is there any way that can make my work nor personal life as 'normal' without it? I can't. I spend at least 2 hrs per day in front of the computer screen.
The funny thing is human has invented computers to assist in their daily work or lifestyle. Read carefully, 'to assist' but for me is rather to live with it!!!!
(2) Mobile phone
I only started using mobile phone in 2002. Got it as my bday gift. Six yrs have passed. I can definitely live without it but it definitely makes my life a hell lot easier.
Technology makes our life easier but at the same time makes us less useful in some ways.
I used to be able to remember at least 100 phone nos. Probably, my dear Joe Sia can be my witness if he still can recall our memory challenge when we stayed in Miri back in 1990. But now, I can hardly recall up to 30 at one time while my mobile phone has 400+ nos of mine.

Concerning computer reliance, I am worst. I am facing computer 10 hours a day.
In office work means turning the computer on. When boss say halt in the project means switch off the computer.
Another two hours I spent at home doing own internet stuff like now.
One thing good about computer is cut down less tree as most information do not have to be printed. Without computer, I believe the forest will dissapear faster.
Thye bad thing with computer is virus andoperating system corruption.
In office, the information is stored in central server or using VSS where similar information is duplicated in our personal laptop and server. This will prevent information lost if our labtop fail.
I used to partition my own computer hardisk into two. One for data and another for operating system. The operating system can fail manay many times but the data is still intake. I could format the patition with the operating system and reinstall a new one without affecting the data. Howvever, I will still lose the dat if my hardisk fail.
Nowaday portable drive is vaialable in hindreds of gigabtes or even terabytes at an affordable price. Regularly backup your own data in the portable drive will prevent information lost if your hardisk fail
As what william had said it always wise to save your important data in your portable drive like pendrive or external hardisk.
You might become the second Edison Chen when you sent your laptop for repair if you stored all your 'important & confidential' data in it? Hahah..... but don't worry too much as you are not celebrity anyway...
Whenever I was in office, that's the time I started using my desktop until back home as my work function is much depend on computer. That's why until now (since I moved into my new house in may 2006)I don't want to install an internet access in my house although I have my own laptop at home. The reason is I would rather spend my after office hours time doing other thing than surfing net or chatting. In late 90s till early 00s, I spent most of my night time chatting and surfing internet....
As for mobile phone, I do agreed that it became our 'need' rather than 'want' in our daily life now. I also hardly memorised my friends handphone numbers as compare with the time I don't own a handphone.
Do you believe it is just a mindset or our own mind playing the rules....due to different expectation ?
All these gadgets are good for us if not we would be owning one. Wife, children, friends, collegues, customers and bosses are also good for us (if not we would have left them much earlier) but it can be a challenges for us when everyone of them start to demand on our time or seeking attention from us.
So if we could not differentiate and manage the time that we have, we may soon also start to have a lot of words (I mean real means words) on them. So,think is it not similar to your gadgets?
You may not want to agree as they are closer to you than the gadgets or you may said that they are human so we could not categorise them the same like gadgets. Well, that is the your perogrative of saying.
Again, I would opine that it is all in our mind...if we can learn like the grand master with clear mind and patience in managing our time (everyone have the same length of time a day) to live a happier life.
It is a mind boggling ? heh ! Think what would the following people worry about ?
- A man living in the jungle ?
- A priest in the Church
- Bill Gates
- George Bush
- Osama Bin Laden
- A teacher
- A house mother
- A slut
Mr Tee, go and look for Tony Buzan. He is the guru of mind mapping.
Oh yes, you can kiss your handphone goodbye after talking to him.
